If you happen to know a guy known as
Sean Gathright <seanster_at_tstc@yahoo.com>
please tell him that his email is working on and off (in other words
it is not working properly) and technically we cannot generate the
proper unlock key for his computer. It is sad to see that in these
modern days people still can't get the email thing to work.
Sean, you really need to get proper training on computer usage. |

An interesting issue to share
(regarding airsoft in New Zealand):
* Thanks Chua for sharing :)
Import restrictions have been
temporarily lifted due to ASNZS' (National representative body)
discussion with the police , for the time being every gun with a
version 3 gearbox can now enter the country a-okay. Version 3
Gearboxes are designed in such a way that when the selector plate
is taken out, the gun cannot fire on full-auto even when the fire
selector is selected on FA, i.e exactly what the NZ Police wanted.
Go ahead, try it: try taking out the selector plate on an AUG or a
G36C, and the gun cannot fire full-auto. The current idea is that
so long as the gun cannot fire on fully-automatic upon entry to
NZ, and so long as the gun cannot be easily reconverted to fire
full-auto without replacing parts or some sort of workaround (a
batch of semi'ed JLS SCAR made by Hobby Theorem/Arms Airsoft/
Airsoft Armory Company, all operated by an Ivan Poon Sai Cheung
was so badly semi'ed that it can fire full-auto when you pull the
charging handle back and pull the trigger at the same time) the
gun will be let in.
Guns with version.2 gearboxes (M4s) and version 6. gearboxes are a
bit of a grey area. Guns like the new JG M4 and JG HK416 seems to
be able to fire reliably on semi-only just by cutting the selector
plate so they can enter without problem (since to reconvert them
you need to get a new selector), but for other guns with a
version.2 gearbox the trigger block needs to be cut down a bit,
otherwise they will fire on burst fire on a soft trigger pull.
Guns will be inspected upon entry by Customs and if they do fire
burst fire the gun gets seized, period. Version 6. Gearbox e.g the
P90 can be easily made back to fully-automatic by re-installing
the screw that allow the gun to go full auto - so we generally do
not recommend importing P90s etc. Status of these guns will be
clarified some time in the future hopefully early March.
Anyway, it is complicated and anyone interested to find out more
about NZ airsoft regulations should contact ASNZS (www.airsoft.net.nz).

Who is going to be the next
giant in the Airsoft industry?
The Korean - they have been very
aggressive in producing springers. Academy and Hap Dong have
already moved to the field of AEG, even though the quality
level is not as good as their Japanese counterparts for the
time being. And they are badly in need for PR people who can
speak accurate foreign languages (such as English). The good
thing is that they do realize their weaknesses and are working
on improvements. Companies like Toystar and Dong Shan have
significant potentials in becoming big global players. The bad
thing is that the labor cost in South Korea keeps going up,
meaning they cannot really afford to enter into price
competition with the others. Fortunately, the domestic market
in Korea is big enough to keep many of them afloat (at least
for now)
The Mainland Chinese - even
though the factories in China can produce replica of any sort
at amazingly low cost, poor quality control (due to generally
poor management) and the lack of creativity make it quite
impossible for the Chinese engineers to develop good airsoft
guns on their own. And, the manufacturing of any gun-like
products (which includes airsoft) is in fact totally illegal
in China, meaning all these factories are running in
"underground mode" at present. Now you know why it is never
possible to find the printed factory addresses on the boxes?
The Taiwanese Chinese - they
have strong engineering and OEM manufacturing background. Some
of them are pretty creative too. But very few of them know how
to do proper PR, and very few of them can speak and write
foreign languages well. Just check out the English version of
their web sites and you will know what I am saying. There was
once I asked a Taiwanese company for evaluation sample and the
lady who was in charge referred me to the "Where to buy" link.
If the Taiwanese want to succeed in the airsoft industry, they
really have to be serious in terms of PR and communications.
The Hong Kong Chinese - they
(almost entirely) rely on China to produce copies of airsoft
products at (extremely) low cost. They have good level of engineering skills, but these skills have been used mostly for
copying and pasting designs. Let's face it, Hong Kong is a
place where short term cash inflow is more important than
anything else, therefore the room for creativity and R&D does
not really exist. Management in general are very short-term
focused, and they don't give a shit to PR. Simply put, they
are just traders, not developers. Totally hopeless.
As a side note: Academy is
a Korean company. ICS and G&G are Taiwanese. CA and G&P are
based in Hong Kong. CYMA, Wells and Double Eagle are based in
Mainland China. |

MP5 AEG for less than USD$50
wholesale? From
a local wholesaler in Hong Kong we can find MP5 AEG clones
at a wholesale price of less than USD$50 each (including 2
mags, battery and charger but no spare butt stock). So what's
wrong? How come this MP5 is so cheap here?
To have a better
understanding, one must first learn the way the Chinese
manufacturers work things out. Basically, if you approach a
manufacturer, two types of deal can be made. 1, you pay
nothing upfront but you must buy a certain quantity of the
finished product. You maintain exclusivity on the resale right
for 3 to 6 months. Afterwards the manufacturer is free to sell
the same gun under a different brand name to someone else. 2,
you pay an upfront "design" fee and act as the sole seller of
the finished products (this is similar to an OEM arrangement).
It is important for you to
know that the manufacturing of airsoft gun is totally illegal
in China. What this means is that the manufacturer is running
underground activities. It would be naive to expect someone
like this to exercise proper ethics. Today you give him the
design, tomorrow he may start producing it and market it under
some other names without sharing with you a penny of the
profits.
Imagine what would happen if
the resellers in Hong Kong sell those clones directly to
the end users in North America. The downward pressure in price
will soon force the authorized distributor to quit the market.

Some interesting news from
Bushmaster's website concerning the M4 trademark:
Windham, ME (December 8th, 2005) - Richard Dyke, Chairman and
principal stockholder of Bushmaster Firearms, is pleased with a
December 6 decision of the United States District Court in Maine
granting summary judgment for Bushmaster in a trademark case brought
by Colt Defense, LLC. In the case, Colt accused Bushmaster of
infringing the “M4” trademark and the trade dress of the M4, both of
which Colt claimed it owned to the exclusion of others in the
industry. In addition to denying Colt’s infringement claims, the
Court granted judgment for Bushmaster on its claim for cancellation
of Colt’s federal trademark registration for the “M4”.
Dyke said he is pleased, not only for Bushmaster, but for the entire
firearms industry. “Colt has for years made all sorts of claims as
to rights it asserted belonged only to it,” he said. “And this case
clearly shows Colt has been overstating its rights. In this case,
the Court determined that the right to use the M4 term and to sell
firearms that look like the M4 type, are rights that belong to the
industry, not just Colt.”
The Court’s order affirmed a prior recommended decision of a U.S.
Magistrate Judge in the case. Among other things, the Magistrate’s
decision:
Held that the M4 is a generic term which merely describes a type of
firearm, and is not an identifier of Colt as a sole source for such
firearms. In doing so, the decision noted that more than a dozen
firearm manufacturers other than Colt have used the term M4 for
years to refer to military-style carbines with collapsible
buttstocks and shortened barrels. Since the M4 term is generic, the
court granted judgment for Bushmaster that Colt’s federal trademark
registration for the M4 should be cancelled.
Dismissed Colt’s claim for infringement of M4 trade dress both
because the alleged trade dress is primarily non-functional and
because Colt could not establish that the buying public associated
the look of the M4 only with Colt.
Dismissed Colt’s claims for infringement of the terms M16, CAR,
MATCH TARGET, AR-15 and COMMANDO because it concluded that there was
no likelihood of confusion among purchasers as to the source of
Bushmaster’s products.
The Court also held Colt could recover no damages on its only
remaining claim under Section 43(a) of the Lanham Act. |

Should I replace the stock cylinder set?
Can I mix and match TM piston with the stock cylinder?
How do I fix the fore grip wobble problem?

<< Springer-to-AEG conversion - the creation of the Kitty Kat AEG
>>
Is springer-to-AEG conversion possible?
What are the steps involved?
|
|
Nov 4, 2005 |
Practical Springer to AEG
conversion MISSION COMPLETED
Conversion of the Cybergun Kitty Kat
springer to full blown AEG has been successfully accomplished. A
major write up will be included in the next major update release of
our Practical AEG Upgrade guide. We would like to thank Denis (the
Cybergun tech guru) for sending us the sample unit of Kitty Kat as
well as the new 300fps+ V2 mechbox. Without his help this conversion
project would have been impossible to start.

The Cybergun Kitty Kat has excellent finishing and a very strong
front barrel assembly, which completely eliminates the problem of
front barrel wobbling found in most TM M4s.

Using a stock Cybergun M4 (soon to be released) 300fps+ mechbox,
the Kitty Kat is powered by an external Sanyo 9.6V 1300mah battery.

In addition to parts from Cybergun, the following third party
parts have also been used, including a CA pistol grip and motor
plate set, a CA M15 safety switch unit, and an ICS Turbo 2000 motor.

More details will be made available in the next major update of
the Practical AEG Upgrade Guide. Stay tuned... |

Oct 23, 2005 |
Practical Springer to AEG
conversion Converting
a springer to an AEG has been possible but impractical due to the
extensive efforts involved. However, with the introduction of the
Cybergun M4 series springers, the story is destined to change. Look
at the pictures below, we have successfully fitted a Version 2
mechbox into a Cybergun Kitty Kat. The whole process took less than
20 minutes to complete.

The Kitty Kat was designed from the
ground up with AEG compatibility in mind. Except for the pistol
grip, the motor plate and the fire selector switch, almost all parts
can be used to support the conversion effort.

There is a need to trim the sides
of tbe hopup unit a little bit. Also, since the Cybergun AEG mechbox
we have has the spring release lever at the back, we need to
accordingly make room in the lower receiver for accommodating it.
We will try to complete the
conversion ASAP and let you guys know the exact steps involved. Stay
tuned...
BTW, I think Cybergun has a very
smart strategy here. A springer upgradeable to AEG - it is destined
to be a market winner.
